Mosquito Control District’s to conduct Aerial Spray in response to large numbers of nuisance mosquitoes.
The West Umatilla Mosquito Control District and the North Morrow Vector Control District will be conducting targeted aerial mosquito control spraying with a twin engine airplane after sunset on Thursday, May 25th, weather permitting. A treatment will be done on the next available day if there is a weather delay. The application is taking place in response to a large hatch of mosquitoes affecting areas in both Western Umatilla County and Northern Morrow County.
A total of 10,000 acres are to be targeted in the Hwy 730 area between the cities of Umatilla and Irrigon, and also in the Power City and Progress Road areas. The South hill neighborhood and the city of Irrigon are in the spray block. Here are some suggestions to reduce the risk of exposure to mosquitoes:
- Get rid of old tires and other containers where water can accumulate and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
- Flush or replace the water in horse troughs weekly.
- Be sure to flush or add mosquito fish to ornamental ponds.
- Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when in mosquito infested areas.
- Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, making sure to follow the directions on the container.
- Screen doors and windows.
