JOB TITLE: Inspector/Sprayer I
Reports To: Directly to Field Supervisor
Classification: Temporary Seasonal (April-September)
Summary of work:
This is a summer/seasonal position in Western Umatilla County. Surveys areas for mosquito larva, measures and mixes pesticides; applies pesticides to infested areas, keeps records of areas surveyed and sprayed. Reports equipment failures to manager; performs minor equipment repairs. Operate district vehicles, hand sprayers, motorized sprayers, and 2-way radios. Ensures proper use of safety equipment; keeps records of all work completed. This position also works within the district public education program at public events. Some weekend work may be required. Perform other duties as directed by the manager.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Operate a district truck within an assigned zone in a safe manner.
- Identify stages of larval development and treat the area as needed.
- Operate truck and hand spray equipment.
- Read and understand pesticide labels, maps, and aerial images.
- Keep organized larvicide records and perform data entry into a computer database.
- Respond to citizen requests for mosquito control.
- Keep equipment and vehicles clean and organized.
- Work at public education events interacting with district constituents.
- Reports equipment failures to Supervisor; performs minor equipment repairs.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age. A background in biology or related science is preferred but not necessary. High school diploma or equivalent required. A valid driver’s license is required. Must be able to traverse uneven terrain, work outside for extended periods in hot weather, be confident working alone in remote areas of the district, and strong communication skills are preferred. An Oregon Public Health Pesticide Applicator license must be obtained within 30 days as a condition of hire. Study materials are provided.
Schedule:
Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week
Some weekend work may be required for public education events
Pay Rate: $15.00- $20.50

Temporary Seasonal Surveillance Technician
JOB TITLE: Temporary Seasonal Surveillance Technician
Reports To: District Manager/Assistant Manager
Classification: Temporary Seasonal (May-September)
Summary of work:
This is a seasonal position responsible for implementing the mosquito light trapping program under the direct supervision of the District Manager. The position consists of setting and retrieving light traps throughout the district Monday through Friday. Identifying mosquito samples in the laboratory and then testing samples for the presence of mosquito- borne disease. Maintaining results of surveillance and other district records on a computer database. This position also works within the district public education program at public events. Some weekend work may be required.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Operate a district truck on a route in a safe manner.
- Set and retrieve CO2 baited mosquito traps in a timely manner with little supervision.
- Identify mosquito larvae and adults to species using mosquito taxonomy keys.
- Ensure proper use of a microscope, laboratory equipment, and specialized testing equipment.
- Keep organized surveillance records and perform data entry into a computer database.
- Respond to citizen requests for trapping.
- Work at public education events interacting with district constituents.
- Reports equipment failures to Supervisor; performs minor equipment repairs.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Supervisor.
